Los De Abajo broke onto the international market with the help of David Byrne, (ex-Talking Heads vocals), who signed them to his Luaka Bop label. He described their first album, released in 1998, as practically a record of political songs, with a punk attitude in the lyrics, inspired by The Clash.

Since then, the band have matured as musicians, and continued to break down barriers as they popularized their music around the world. Their second album CyberTropic Chilango Power (2002). This album won an award by the BBC in 2003. Also in 2003, Los de Abajo released their Latin Ska Force album that they produced independently to satisfy Mexicos still-growing Ska market, and which has sold some 25,000 copies through grassroots distribution, just in Mexico City alone.

In 2005, with their record Los de Abajo vs. The Lunatics they were invited with the new best band of that moment, The Arctic Monkeys, to Later with Jools Holland, and after an extensive international tour in the years following, Los De Abajo released their new album Actitus Calle in Latin America in 2009, to be followed by a European release and tour in the summer of 2010 and 2011.
